problem
Pure Electric needed a fast-to-market, well-engineered scooter to compete with Xiaomi in the entry-level segment. The product had to be cost-efficient to manufacture, exceptionally robust, and equipped with the right feature set to win its category.
solution
The Pure Air (3) was developed with a contract manufacturer, using an off-the-shelf platform as the foundation. Our task was to elevate it to Pure Electric’s engineering and robustness standards, align it with the brand’s visual language, and enhance the feature set to outperform competitors. This included revised tooling, design updates, and the addition of IP65 protection and upgraded safety lighting.
The team and I took the Pure Air (3) to market from conception in just 8 months. We were undoubtably helped by the use of an off-the-shelve platform. For hardware startups were speed-to-market and cost are important, maximising the use of off-the-shelve components and platforms is essential.

I helped deliver the Pure Air (3) with a small team of three multidisciplinary product design engineers. My responsibilities included drafting comprehensive product specifications and requirement documents for the contract manufacturer—covering robustness, safety and lighting, motor performance, and IP rating—to enable rapid, high-quality development.
I also contributed to the industrial design and CMF, working closely with Pure Electric’s in-house designer, David Leonard, to ensure the scooter aligned with the brand’s established visual language.
I led the design and engineering verification processes, creating test plans, reviewing prototype builds, and validating that the scooter met Pure Electric’s performance, durability, and safety standards before release.
Additionally, I designed the full out-of-box experience for the Pure Air (3), Advance, and Advance Flex. This included packaging that presented the product without requiring lifting during setup and integrating printed quick-start instructions directly inside the box for a clear, intuitive assembly process.
